General Meeting of the Coalition (#1)
EITI (May 13, 2004)
The first general meeting of the Coalition "For Improving Transparency in
Extractive Industries" was held on May 13, 2004. That was a constituent meeting
and was a result of the seminar organized by the Open Society Institute's
Azerbaijan Foundation. The objective of the seminar was to discuss the role
Azerbaijani NGOs could play in the application of the Extractive Industry
Transparency Initiative. The seminar's agenda included two main
presentations.
1. Goals and objectives of the EITI and development prospects in Azerbaijan
(presenter: Inqilab Ahmadov, director of the Public Funds Monitoring Center)
2. Role of the civil society in the EITI development in Azerbaijan
(presenter: Sabit Bagirov, president of the Entrepreneurship Development
Foundation).
After the presentations, the issue of the Azerbaijani NGOs' participation in
the EITI was discussed. Following the discussion, the vast majority of the
meeting participants voiced support for the suggestion to establish an NGO
coalition. Then, drafts of the Coalition's Memorandum and Regulations were
discussed and adopted with some amendments. Then the Coalition's administrative
body, the Council, was elected.
